On Gay Marriage
I posted this on Americablog:
As I've said before, I figured out why gay marriage is so threatening to some folks... A same sex couple puts up with stresses and strains that a straight couple doesn't, as well as the normal strains every couple has. If the foundation of your marriage is simply sex, procreation, and "everyone does it", as well as the fact that you see your friends and relatives marriages fail-despite the support for heterosexual marriges- deep inside some little part of them has to be scared spitless that gays and lesbians have a foundation more solid. To watch a person suceed at an easy task is no big deal. To watch someone succeed with the deck stacked against them either inspires or makes you feel inadequate.
If you feel less than 100% solid in the loving partnership of your marriage, viewing families formed by homosexuals struggling to provide the same things to spouse and children het couples can automatically has got to make you feel less adequate. When a person is threatened, they lash out at the threat.
We scare them because we can show that the "selfosh hedonist" label is a streotype that does not hold true. We can show in our present long term committed relations a steadfastness and courage that puts most het couples to shame. By overcoming legal or logistical constraints, we show a willingness to work and sacrifice for our relationships that transcends the selfish easy way out culture that most folks buy into. We are too good at this stuff, and it scares the piss out of the straights that have been taught how inferior and morally corrupt we are. They are scared of having gays marry and be living next to a couple that stay married while they end up divorced.
